The Blackburn Vet has been looking after the pets in your area since 1993. Our highly qualified team includes Dr Terry, Dr Mark, and Dr Alison, their special interest and expertise are in small animal medicine, general surgeries, dentistry, and more. As well as providing veterinary care for your beloved pets, we also have cat boarding facilities to accommodate your feline friends while you are away, and DIY dog hydrobath facility.

We enjoy educating our community and often host information nights and wildlife experience days. We also welcome schools to visit our clinic for a tour and learn about what we do here at The Blackburn Vet. Our team also visits Kindergardens and primary schools to offer our fun Pets and People Education Program (PetPEP) which educates students about responsible pet ownership. 

The Blackburn Vet will ease your concerns with our expertise and compassion. We love meeting the members of our community and value that special one on one relationship with the pets and their owners. Over the years we have created many friends and have been lucky enough to witness families and their pets grow and develop together.

Dr Terry Bassett
Lead Vet

Terry Graduated from Massey University, NZ in 1994 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Bachelor of Philosophy (Microbiology) in 1994. He then spent the next 7 years in the Taranaki doing mixed practice with an emphasis on small animal practice. In 2000 Terry undertook a residency in emergency and critical care at the University of Melbourne and while there he attained a Masters of Veterinary Science. He is a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in both emergency and critical care and medicine of cats. He is also a member of the International Society of Feline Medicine Academy of Feline Practitioners. After completing his residency Terry has been working as an emergency and critical care veterinarian in Melbourne for the past 18 years. During this time he has gained experience in the diagnosis and treatment of many complex and challenging cases, referral medicine and surgery and has become a very experienced ultra-sonographer.

After 20 years of emergency medicine Terry has chosen to go back to general practice for a change of pace, but he brings a wealth of clinical experience which will benefit his clients

Areas of particular interest include pain management and diagnostic imaging, including cardiology, and surgery and medicine.

Outside of work Terry is a volunteer firefighter who has been involved with some significant bushfires in Victoria over that past 21 years. Pets include 2 whippets, Max and Heidi, Ruby the eclectus parrot, Smarties a pinapple conure, Winston and Mable 2 british shorthairs, Tommy the alpaca, Margret, Barbra and Martha our 3 sheep. He also has 2 boys who keep him entertained as well

Dr Mark
Senior Veterinary Surgeon

Mark graduated from the University of QLD in 1992 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science and has a degree in Agriculture Science also. He began his career at Lort Smith Animal Hospital and the RSPCA before coming to Ferntree Gully Veterinary Hospital in 1999 where he stayed until he joined the Blackurn team in March 2021.

Mark brings with him years of experience and has a keen interest in anaesthetics and pain management. Mark and his wife have 4 children and 2 cats named Gemma Rose & Olive. In his spare time he enjoys fishing, watching Rugby, listening to ACDC and following Collingwood.

Veterinary Nurse

Kaitlyn joined the Blackburn Team in March 2021 and is new to the industry but years of experience of loving and caring for her own pets.

Kaitlyn has previously managed in the hospitality industry and loves getting to know clients and their pets.

At home Kaitlyn has a Chubby kitty called Holly, A rainbow lorikeet called Daisy and a horse called Petee.

Veterinary Nurse

Kirralee joined the Blackburn Team in 2021 and is new to the Veterinary industry but years of experience of loving and caring for her own pets as well as working in animal care.

Kirralee's interests include exotic animals and livestock, thanks to previous studies in livestock.

Kirralee loves spending time reading in the garden with her two guinea pigs, Bangers and Mash and her three chickens.

Veterinary Nurse

Maria is one of our amazing Vet nurses at Blackburn.

Maria is in her last year of study and will very soon be a qualified Vet nurse.  

Maris grew up in rural Victoria and has always surrounded herself with animals. She has a cheeky cat called Tiger who she loves and spoils at every opportunity.

Veterinary Nurse

Rebekah is one of our amazing nurses who is studying Veterinary Nursing. She spent 5 years in the navy before having an injury, and then after leaving the navy decided to pursue her dream of vet nursing.

Rebekah has a thoroughbred mare Trixie (who is a movie star, legit) a black german shepherd Odin who is her best friend and a gold fish.

Rebekah has always had a passion for animals particularly horses and started riding from a very young age. She attended a live in agricultural college to study horse breeding as a teen.

In her spare time Rebekah loves reading and is an avid learner, as she likes to know things about everything

Veterinary Nurse

Meet one of our Vet Nurses, Francesca! Fran has a kitty named Oscar, and a cute doggo named Bosko.

She has completed her Certificate III in Animal Studies and now moving on to Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing to follow her dreams of working with the pets you love! Fran also loves going on adventures and exploring what the work has to offer. 

Veterinary Nurse

Anna is completing her Bachelor of Veterinary Nursing, and has an interest in exotics and wildlife with previous studies in zoology. She has always loved caring for animals and has enjoyed volunteering in animal shelters over the years. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her 3 cats and practicing figure skating.
